Abstract: Cultivation trials on a new cultivar of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare cv. soroksari), had been started in 2003. Aim of the present study was to determine the optimal sowing date. Small plot experiment was installed in the experiment station ofAgriculture of TarbiatModarresUniversity, located in the suburb of Tehran, Iran. Propagation was carried out in 5March, 20 March, 5 April, 20 April, 5May, 20May, 5 June and 20 June. Sowing dates had significant effect on growth, seed yield and active substances (anethole, fenchone and estragole) content of fennel plant. According to the Iranian investigation site the seeds were sown on 5 and 20 of June resulted in plant producing no flowers and fruit. The highest plant (150 cm), the largest number of branches per plant (7.5 psc.) were developed by the plants sown on 5 of April. The highest seed yield (1900 g/plot) was also produced from the plots, which were sown on 5 April. The highest amount of trans-anethole (68.6 %) was extracted fromthe plants were sown on 5 ofMarch. It could be concluded that more suitable date for sowing of Foeniculum vulgare cv. soroksari as a potential source of anethole in Tehran, Iran was spring, from 5 of March to 5 of April.
